Melody Friedman

Melody has been a student of yoga since the late 1970s and remembers going to her first class with her mom when she was just a teen.  It was fun, but no match for the high energy dance team she went on to lead during her high school years growing up in South Texas.  She is a Desert Storm veteran and after her active duty tour in the US Navy, she began working with the MWR (Morale, Welfare & Recreation) Fitness & Wellness Programs on board Naval Base San Diego.

While teaching various group fitness formats, she flirted the idea of a Yoga offering on board the naval base.  The idea wasn’t embraced in the early 1990s, but she pursued her passion and interest in the mind/body connection while working with The Anthony Robbins Companies Creative Team and at the Kaiser Permanente Positive Choice Wellness Center.  When offered the opportunity of a mentorship to teach yoga with the instructors at Positive Choice, her journey into the study of Yoga and its benefits beyond the mat began.

Melody has taught in various settings including gyms, studios, shelters, hospitals, military installations, and the great outdoors.  She was delighted to recently experience the manifestation of her vision while teaching yoga on board Naval Base San Diego, with an added bonus of a SUP Yoga offering on the water of the Olympic sized swimming pool.  She enjoys watching the practice of yoga grow in all the places and feels a sacred sense of duty to give back to yoga what it has given to her.  She is especially drawn to the study of trauma informed yoga and healing trauma with yoga.  Her classes are a dynamic mix of vinyasa flow with an emphasis on alignment while also providing modifications to support all levels.  She weaves in the subtle parts of yoga with asana practice being the vehicle for growth and evolution off the mat.

Today her days are spent as a civil servant with the Veterans Outreach Programs collaboration of the Department of Labor, Veterans Administration & the State of California, where she has a full-time position serving those who have served with overcoming service connected barriers and their transition to civilian life and livelihoods.

Melody is a graduate of CSU San Marcos where she earned a B.A., an ACE (American Council on Exercise) Certified Group Fitness Instructor and an E-RYT 200 with 25+ years of teaching and coaching experience in the Behavioral Health & Wellness Industry.  She is a lover of learning and recently completed trainings with BOGA Paddle & Surf and aims to continue on her yogic path with studies towards the RYT-500 hour level someday.
